Breed’s team begins its work amid increased scrutiny the district faces over handling of multiple crises
San Francisco Mayor London Breed said Monday her deployment of multiple department heads to provide oversight of The City’s public schools is “about providing solutions” rather than assigning “blame.”
The San Francisco Unified School District is facing a number of crises, from a massive budget deficit ahead of the 2025-26 school year to a number of school closures and mergers set to take effect next fall. Wayne faced heightened criticism following his announcement earlier this month that the district wouldn’t release a list of impacted schools in September as previously planned, leaving families in limbo and unsure if their children's schools are on the chopping block.
Parents who attended the closed board of education meeting Sunday called on the district to be more transparent regarding school closures and top personnel decisions, including firing and hiring. Former school board President Lainie Motamedi resigned last month citing health reasons. She then told the San Francisco Chronicle on Thursday she resigned due to Wayne’s ineffective leadership, saying that Wayne “hasn’t delivered.” Breed declined to comment on when a list of school closures will be published. Wayne said this month the district would do so in October after delaying its previously scheduled Sept. 18 publication.
