Wayne’s resignation comes days after the mayor said she had “no confidence” in the district school-closures process and his ability to execute it

The San Francisco Unified School District will have a new superintendent, and the Board of Education is no longer exploring school closures. Matt Wayne resigned as the San Francisco Unified School District superintendent Friday night, with the school board revealing it intended to name Department of Children, Youth and their Families Executive Director Maria Su to replace him.

Su, at the board’s direction, will stop the ongoing process evaluating schools to be closed, merged or repurposed once she assumes the role. District officials said Friday that Su will serve in the role through June 2026 as part of an agreement with The City. The Board of Education voted to accept Wayne’s resignation in a closed session Friday, just three days after Mayor London Breed said she’d “lost confidence” in Wayne’s ability to lead the district through the tumultuous time. “With a new Board of Education being seated soon as well as our ongoing significant fiscal issues, I believe the time is right for new leadership in the District,” Wayne wrote in a letter to SFUSD families Friday. “From day one, every decision I have made has been to benefit the students, families, and staff of SFUSD, including this one. I appreciate the opportunity to have served this community during such challenging times.” Su said in a statement provided by the district that it was “a privilege to be considered for this opportunity by the Board of Education, and I am excited to deepen the work we started three weeks ago to stabilize the school district.” Friday’s trio of announcements were the latest developments in an eventful full months in the district, all amid an ongoing state audit of the school system prompted by its precarious financial position. The news broke just shy of two weeks before Election Day, when four seats on the Board of Education will be up for grabs. The San Francisco Board of Education held an emergency meeting Sept. 22 to evaluate Wayne’s job performance after former Board of Education President Lainie Motamedi named Wayne’s mismanagement as a principle cause of her resignation. That same day, Breed said Su and Recreation and Parks Department General Manager Phil Ginsburg would co-lead a School Stabilization Team to help the embattled district balance its books and avoid a state takeover. The list was originally set to publish Sept. 18. Wayne faced fierce criticism from families, advocates and elected officials almost immediately, culminating in Breed on Tuesday speaking out against the school-closure process and directly criticizing his ability to lead it. Breed said the decision to close schools “has become a distraction from the very real work that must be done to balance the budget in the next two months to prevent a state takeover.” Wayne has served in the role since 2022, inheriting issues such as a faulty payroll system, staffing shortages and a burgeoning financial crisis. The San Francisco Chronicle, Mission Local and San Francisco Standard reported Thursday that Wayne had agreed to step down from his post atop the public-school district, doing so as he visited schools slated for closure by August 2025 to discuss next steps with potentially impacted families. The superintendent finished his tour of impacted schools that day, ending with The Academy San Francisco at McAteer. A day later, the Board of Education announced its intention to appoint Su to Wayne’s vacated position. Breed said in a prepared statement that Su has her “full confidence in this new role leading our public schools.” “The most important thing right now is for the School District to close its budget deficit to prevent a state takeover and to instill trust and confidence in the District,” Breed said. “I know Maria has what it takes to lead this process with clarity, compassion and a commitment to strong communications with families and educators.” California State Superintendent Tony Thurmond said he and his team will “work closely” with Breed, Su, the school board, and district educators, staff and families “to work successfully through the district’s current challenges.” The state will “continue to provide fiscal experts to help SFUSD balance its budget and build the fiscal systems needed to support the world-class education system that all San Francisco families deserve,” Thurmond said. In her new role, Su has less than two months to deliver a balanced interim budget report. The district faces a Dec. 15 deadline to submit it to the California Department of Education, local officials said in a release Friday, otherwise risking a state takeover.
