Covenant Aviation Security workers at San Francisco International Airport protested for higher pay and better working conditions. They say their current wages are not keeping pace with the cost of living and that a 2022 law requiring pay parity with TSA employees is not being followed.
Security screeners at San Francisco International Airport ( SFO ) protested on Thursday for higher pay, citing concerns about pay inequity and staff retention. Approximately 1,000 security screeners employed by Covenant Aviation Security, contracted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), joined the demonstration outside Harvey Milk Terminal.
Workers, represented by the Service Employees International Union-United Service Workers West, claim their pay does not keep pace with the cost of living in the Bay Area. They argue that a 2022 law requiring contractors to compensate employees at levels comparable to TSA's directly-employed workers is not being adequately implemented at SFO. Protesters say at least $12 million in back pay is owed, and point to high stress levels and difficulty attracting and retaining experienced staff due to the pay situation. San Francisco District 1 Supervisor Connie Chan showed support for the union, pledging to inquire with TSA and the federal government about contract adherence.
