The unveiling of a bronze sculpture dedicated to Maya Angelou and the arrival of a new restaurant near UN Plaza trumpeted as signs of momentum in the area
Ten months into their concerted efforts to revamp Civic Center Plaza and the surrounding area, San Francisco officials said that their work to bring a sense of vibrancy back to the neighborhood is paying dividends.
The kiosk first opened in 2018 and had sat vacant since March following the closure of Assembly Cafe and Beer Garden. Limoncello staff said they expected to serve crowds over the weekend from a two-day skateboarding competition happening in UN Plaza, an antiques pop-up shopping market and a neighborhood block party taking place Sunday.
Limoncello owner Jalal Heydari said the kiosk will operate 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Service was extended an additional hour for Friday’s concerts, allowing attendees to grab pizza, sandwiches or gelato after the show. Heydari said his team is “proud to be part of the revitalization of the area” and that they want to help contribute “to the vibrant atmosphere.” City Librarian Michael Lambert said it was “fitting for this extraordinary art” to be at the Main Library’s entrance. He said that Thomas creating the sculpture as a book meant that the art piece would symbolize “the entry point for all that we do as library workers for our community.”
