For over a month now, Short says he has met with registered nurse Teal Fennell to update her on his life and receive medication that keeps the symptoms of his bipolar disorder and schizophrenia at bay. His little black dog, Steve Earl, joins him on the visits.
Short, who says he has been intermittently homeless while contending with mental-health issues and multiple addictions, said he was able to get himself back on track after connecting with a case manager through the Department of Public Health. Now maintaining his sobriety and regularly medicating, Short says he lives with his uncle, takes college classes in his spare time and volunteers with Muttville, the dog rescue from which he adopted Steve Earl.

Nate Miller said he came to Bayshore after a stint at the department’s Medical Respite & Sobering Center due to chronic, unexplained swelling issues in his legs.
