San Francisco doesn't fall within the solar eclipse's path of totality, but viewers in The City can still the most out of viewing the astronomical event
Since 1998, the Exploratorium has partnered with NASA to stream the astronomical events to guests from locations across the globe, as well as provide educational programs and resources. On Monday, the museum will once again host an eclipse watch party, as well as a handful of free activities.
The trick is the earth is not always in that portion of space to have the light of the sun blocked out so that shadow is falling in space. Sometimes when this does occur with the plane of the Earth’s orbit aligning with the plane of the sun and the moon, that shadow will fall on earth, but not always in a place where people can see it. It could be in the middle of the ocean, or something like that.
If you want to be in that path of totality, you’re located in that absolute shadow where the sun’s light is being completely blocked. Now, let's think about making shadows or looking at shadows, which I always encourage people to do because it's a fun thing.
