The study highlights the lack of access to medical care for those unhoused in San Francisco County

Unhoused people in San Francisco are 16 times more likely to die a sudden death than the rest of the population, according to a new UCSF study published Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

A cardiologist, Tseng, was interested in which sudden deaths were caused by cardiac-related events, as opposed to stroke, overdose, etc., and “the only way to know is to do an autopsy and a full post-mortem,” he said. Homeless people were also more likely to suffer sudden deaths at a younger age, at around 57 years old compared to 61. Men and people of color were more at risk and more likely to suffer from mental health challenges and substance or alcohol use disorders.
