'I was struck by the beauty and variety of scenery — eucalyptus, wildflowers, a grassy meadow, meandering pathways with rolling hills and views of Sutro Tower.'

The transition from neighborhood to nature happens in an instant. One minute I’m walking along Panorama Drive in Twin Peaks, and then the next, I’m surrounded by greenery. A smile appears on my face and I think to myself that this may just be the most underrated hiking spot in San Francisco.

An old teacup and glass bottle are found to the side of the “Bedpan Alley” section of the Steep Ravine Trail.To get the full story, I sat down for a chat with Matthew Blain, chair of the SF Urban Riders, an organization that works on multi-use trail advocacy and access — and that was instrumental in making these trails a reality. Blain shared that fellow Urban Rider Nick Bear had been excited about the potential for a trail system at Laguna Honda for years.

Sweetening the deal was the fact that the Urban Riders came to the hospital with the opportunity for funding in the form of a San Francisco Community Challenge Grant. Later on, additional funding came from 2018 District 7 participatory budget funds, corporations, nonprofit groups and individual donors.
