The NOAA and National Weather Service issued updated guidance just before noon

San Francisco is no longer under a tsunami warning after a magnitude-7.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Humboldt County at 10:44 a.m. Thursday. The NOAA and National Weather Service issued updated guidance just before noon, a little over an hour after the earthquake rattled Northern California.

A separate magnitude-1.0 earthquake struck about 5.6 miles north of Cobb in Lake County three minutes later. It was incorrectly classified as a magnitude-5.8 earthquake, according to federal officials. San Franciscans felt shaking, and BART stopped all service in the Transbay Tube. Residents’ phones pinged with a National Weather Service-issued tsunami warning at 10:51 a.m., with officials initially estimating dangerous waves estimated to start in San Francisco at 12:10 p.m. “We’re still gathering information,” said Christine Goulet, the director of the U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Science Center, during a Thursday morning press briefing. She added that the separate earthquake had been deemed a local event with an incorrect magnitude, as it occurred minutes after the magnitude-7.0 quake in Humboldt County. BART began resuming normal service just after 11:46 a.m., warning riders to expect major systemwide delays. Portions of the Outer Sunset, Outer Richmond, Marina, Fisherman’s Wharf, North Beach, Financial District, Mission Bay, and Hunters Point are in tsunami-inundation hazard zones. Residents were directed to move inland and to higher ground. The San Francisco Zoo, which is in such a zone, has been evacuated, the zoo posted on social media. While the warning was still in effect, National Weather Service meteorologist Rachel Kennedy urged San Franciscans “along the coast” to evacuate inland immediately. She said there was no “one-size-fits-all” definition, referring residents to check with their local inundation maps.
