At least 30 RVs are parked along Lake Merced.
A four-hour parking limit along Lake Merced is coming later this year, which advocates worry will displace the many families who live in vehicles along the lake and subsequently exacerbate San Francisco’s homelessness crisis.
The high pedestrian-traffic area contains Parkmerced, one of the largest rental-housing communities in The City, as well as Lowell High School, Lakeshore Elementary School and San Francisco State University. Two pedestrian deaths — one in 2021 and one last month — and 87 injuries occurred around the lake in the last five years.
“There are no great solutions here,” said Manny Yekutiel of the SFMTA Board of Directors before the board voted on the parking limit. “We know that is one of the biggest issues in the city, it’s dangerous to delay pedestrian projects.” Ex // Top Stories Cruise unveils first wheelchair accessible robotaxi at SF HQ The polarizing AV company is hoping to assist a community that's historically had inadequate access to transportation.
Jennifer Fridenbach, executive director of the Coalition on Homelessness, said the nonprofit has been “working hard with the city” to find an alternative location for the families.
