Sixty years of documents from Williams' GlLIDE tenure are now on display at the main branch

As The City prepares to hold a memorial service for the late Rev. Cecil Williams , a trove of documents chronicling the longtime local civil-rights leader and co-founder of Glide Memorial Church ’s work have found a permanent home at the San Francisco Public Library’s main branch.

The GLIDE Foundation said Williams, 94, died April 22 in his San Francisco home, surrounded by friends and family. The collection documents the ways in which the organization served vulnerable Tenderloin residents and LGBTQ San Franciscans during Williams’ GLIDE tenure. He transitioned the church’s small white, affluent congregation into an inclusive bunch that welcomed sex workers, drug users and other marginalized residents. Williams’ speeches, sermons, correspondence and published writings — as well as those of Mirikitani, who died in July 2021 from cancer — are included.
