Most notably, according to the letter, he had alcohol and amphetamine in his system when he died and had been searching on his computer for information about brain anatomy. Investigators also found gunshot residue on both his hands and his DNA on a pistol found under his leg, according to the letter. Papers found at the scene confirmed that Balaji owned the gun, and a ballistics test confirmed that the pistol was the same one that killed him, investigators said.
The medical examiner’s office determined Balaji died of suicide soon after police found his body on Nov. 26. Since then, his parents have disputed that conclusion. A second autopsy they commissioned and a report from crime-scene investigators they hired both raised the possibility that their son was murdered, they have said. His parents have repeatedly called for a wider investigation, calls that have been echoed by Elon Musk, Tucker Carlson, Silicon Valley Rep.

A medical examiner pathologist later conducted an autopsy and investigators tested his blood and gun, Scott and Sewell said in the letter.
Responding police officers spoke with one of Balaji’s neighbors and the building’s property manager, the letter said. Two people who lived on the same floor as Balaji said they had been unaware of Balaji’s death until contacted by The Examiner this week.
