San Francisco International Hip Hop DanceFest celebrates 25 years of hip-hop
Twenty five years ago, San Francisco-based dancer, teacher and choreographer Micaya had a vision. She aspired to create an international festival that would “appreciate and respect and revere the artistry” of hip-hop dance as a “prestigious, highly regarded, and highly-respected” fine art.
The festival is funded by arts organizations, grants and donors, including fiscal sponsorship from Bay Area-based Dancers’ Group, which aims to promote the “visibility and viability of dance,” per the group’s website. But this stage is different, she said. These are “dance companies who have put together pieces of choreography and dancers that are super skilled in their craft,” Micaya said.
