Tyler Fitzgerald was designated for assignment to make room for Smith, who was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento

San Francisco Giants’ Luis Matos connects for a solo home run in the third inning of their MLB game at Oracle Park in San Francisco, Calif., on Saturday, May 3, 2025. SAN DIEGO — Outfielder Luis Matos’ tenure with the Giants officially ended on Monday afternoon as the team traded him to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for cash considerations.

“It’s a collective decision with , with Tony and his staff. The Matos one was hard,” said president of baseball operations Buster Posey last Wednesday. “He’s been a Giant for a while now. Ultimately, felt like carrying Oliva with what he could do on the basepaths defensively is a weapon for us.” The Giants may also be bidding farewell to another once-promising player, designating utility man Tyler Fitzgerald for assignment on Monday as well. Fitzgerald was DFA’d to make room on the 40-man roster for right-handed reliever Dylan Smith, who San Francisco acquired from the Detroit Tigers for cash considerations. Smith, 25, was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento, which keeps the major league roster intact. He was recently designated for assignment by the Tigers to make room for Kevin McGonigle, one of the game’s top prospects.were considered future pillars of the organization, but both former top prospects have seen their time with the Giants end in recent months. Matos, 24, saw substantially more time in the majors of the two, playing 178 games over three major league seasons, but never produced enough to stick. While Matos had aen route to winning National League Player of the Week, he had a .650 OPS with 15 home runs over 593 plate appearances and rated out as a below-average defender in the outfield. The outfielder’s development was likely impacted by being called up as a 21-year-old with barely any playing time in Triple-A under his belt at the time of his promotion. It’s possible that Matos’ expedited path to the majors played a role in the front office’s decision to start Fitzgerald, 28, also looked like a foundational piece after his memorable 2024 season, one in which he hit 15 home runs and stole 17 bases over 96 games. He earned the job of 2025 Opening Day second baseman but didn’t come close to replicating his rookie production, hitting .217 with four homers and nine steals over 72 games and spending a good chunk of the year with Sacramento. Smith was drafted in the third round of the 2021 MLB draft by the Tigers out of Alabama and made his major league debut last season, allowing two runs over 13 innings but only striking out four batters.
