The moves leave San Francisco with three rookie catchers on their roster to open the second half of the season.

, on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. SEATTLE — As they begin the final 66 games of the regular season, the Giants have decided to place their trust solely in the hands of rookies behind the plate. Before their first game of the second half on Friday, San Francisco welcomed back rookie catcher Daniel Susac from the injured list and designated veteran backstop Eric Haase for assignment.
The decision to designate Haase for assignment leaves San Francisco with three rookie catchers on their roster: Susac, Drew Cavanaugh and Jesús Rodríguez.
“I think just on the person front, tough to part ways with Haase. It was difficult goodbyes in that situation for everybody that he came across,” said manager Tony Vitello.
“The record wouldn’t reflect it, but he left the place a better place just by being the person that he is. He had his son around the park, and it was always good to be around them. ” Susac isn’t catching on Friday against the Mariners but will start on Saturday. Vitello said Susac and Cavanaugh will split the workload during this six-game trip.
Rodríguez, who can also play the infield and outfield, will occasionally get opportunities behind the plate as well.
“It’s nice that he’s got the availability to do different things,” Vitello said. “The one thing with Bericoto not being available — and some of the other lineup situations we have — he’s probably your best shot as a right-handed pinch-hit at-bat. We’ll see how it ends up working out. ” Susac, 25, hasn’t played since June 25 due to a low back strain.
Over 37 games this season, Susac is hitting .262 with no home runs and a .640 OPS while being worth +5 defensive runs saved. Cavanaugh, 24, is hitting .219 with a .543 OPS over 12 games and has been worth -1 defensive run saved.
Third baseman Matt Chapman, who is currently on the injured list with an abdominal strain, began swinging back in San Francisco for the first time since sustaining his injury on June 30, per Vitello. Vitello said it would be “a little bit of a stretch” for Chapman to return to the team during its current road trip, adding it’s more likely that he’s activated when the Giants return home on July 24.
Casey Schmitt has been excellent at third base in Chapman’s absence, hitting .261 with three home runs and seven RBIs while makingfrom Double-A to Triple-A, as well as infielder Gavin Kilen and outfielders Dakota Jordan and Trevor Cohen from High-A to Double-A. “Obviously, they both got a ton of capability,” Vitello said of Davidson and Harber.
“Parks has got a track record that’s off the charts. Bo’s just a great story in general. ” Davidson and Harber were both undrafted out of college but are now knocking on the doors of the majors. The 24-year-old Davidson started his collegiate career at Guilford Tech, took a year-and-a-half off from baseball because of a family matter, then transferred to Caldwell Community College.
Davidson, who has been referred to as the “JUCO Barry Bonds,” signed with the Giants and has become one of the farm system’s best prospects, rated No. 4 by Baseball America. Harber, who is also 24, went undrafted despite performing well at Georgia and North Carolina . He signed with the Yankees for $50,000 as a nondrafted free agent and was part of the return package for Camilo Doval at last year’s deadline.
Vitello spent his first All-Star break in Cabo, describing the time off as “relaxing” and “refreshing. ” The Giants’ manager didn’t have a big conversation with the whole group but had individual conversations ahead of the second half.spoke with reporters over Zoom this morning ahead of his induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on July 26.
This year’s ceremony is expected to have 61 Hall of Famers present, which would break the previous record of 58 at the 2019 ceremony.
“I still can’t find the words, guys,” Kent said. “I just still don’t know what the words are. ”
