The Giants were hit for two jerseys, a face mask and a bag of jelly beans, according to a new report.
Pitcher Kyle Harrison of the San Francisco Giants poses for a portrait during MLB photo day. He was not involved in any equipment theft.Investigators have gone an impressive 1-for-2 on helping to find equipment thieves over the past three seasons, including one who stung the San Francisco Giants for a couple of jerseys and"a bag of jelly beans."from Sports Illustrated published Monday
about a string of equipment thefts that took place during MLB's pandemic-shortened season in 2020. He was one of the first clubhouse guys around the league to notice things went missing, after an early-September series with the Colorado Rockies. The missing items included"one Cueto jersey, one Sandoval jersey and a Giants COVID-19 face mask," according to SI.
The jerseys were later found on eBay, but the person who put them on the site was simply reselling them after buying them off the real thief, Dakota Devon Reeves, a 30-year-old who worked at theReeves would stuff his stolen goods down his pants, according to police, with compression tights hiding his newfound treasure. He ultimately pleaded guilty to a low-level felony and served a year of probation, according to Sports Illustrated.
Reeves, whose scheme was just to make some extra money on the side, served a year's probation for Class 6 felony theft, but the Giants' concerns with theft were not quite over. In 2021, another equipment thief emerged"in another National League city." Grems told SI's Stephanie Apstein that he"planted bats all over the place" to try to catch this perp, but nothing came about, neither in that series nor in 2022 at all, apparently. In other words, the cat-and-mouse game between MLB teams and a gear thief could resume this season.
