Proposition proponents say Arts Commission is not some “big, bad boogeyman that needs to be cut”
A proposition on the November ballot would slash the number of San Francisco commissions, which some say threatens the democratic process behind the support of The City’s fine arts.
The Ballot Simplification Committee listed the Arts Commission as one of the 24 bodies that would be removed from the City Charter, along with commissions overseeing public health, the library, human rights, human services and juvenile probation, and thus made vulnerable to possible elimination The San Francisco Arts Commission was established by City Charter in 1932 and consists of 15 mayoral appointees serving four-year terms. Opponents say its dissolution would greatly impact arts organizations at all scales.
