Seychelles opposition candidate Wavel Ramkalawan upset President Danny Faure from the archipelago's long-ruling party on Sunday after two decades of failed attempts for the office.

“I declare ... Ramkalawan as the elected candidate,” said electoral commission chairman Danny Lucas. He won with 54.9% of valid votes cast, the commission said. Ramkalawan of the Linyon Demokratik Seselwa party had unsuccessfully contested the presidency since 1998. He and another opposition candidate, Alain St Ange of the One Seychelles party, had both promised voters they would raise the minimum wage.
