Sexually violent predator’s ‘transient release’ to Santa Cruz County denied
SANTA CRUZ — After months of back-and-forth, a superior court judge denied requests Tuesday to release a sexually violent predator from a state hospital without a designated address.
“Liberty really has shown its work this time and detailed many, many release situations,” Santa Cruz County Superior Court Judge Syda Cogliati said. “They explained in detail, essentially, why none of them at this time appear to be workable.” After hearing from Cogliati that his client would not likely be freed from the Department of State Hospitals — Coalinga on Tuesday, Cheek’s defense attorney Stephen Prekoski asked the judge to formalize the ruling on his motion. Prekoski asked that Cheek receive either an “outright release” or a “transient release” from the state hospital.
