Johnny Sexton has been hit with a misconduct letter for his comments towards referee Jaco Peyper in a blow to the Ireland flyhalf’s preparation for the World Cup.Sexton has been charged with three counts of misconduct for his comments aimed at the match officials following Leinster’s loss to La Rochelle in the Champions Cup final.
Sexton, who missed the game due to injury, is reported to have admonished the match official team – Peyper and assistants Karl Dickson and Christophe Ridley – allegedly telling them that they were a “disgrace” and he also used expletives. The match officials were reportedly asked for witness statements and described Sexton’s behaviour as intimidating.Sexton could be banned for up to 10 weeks and while that is unlikely to affect his participation in any of the World Cup games, it would significantly impact his preparation for the tournament.
The 37-year-old has been out since March due to a groin injury and a potential ban could see him go into the World Cup in France without any significant recent game time under his belt. Ireland are in Pool B at the tournament, along with defending champions South Africa, Scotland, Tonga and Romania.
