A mechanical issue at San Antonio Water System's largest treatment plant caused over 100,000 gallons of sewage to spill into the San Antonio River Sunday night.
Thousands of gallons of sewage spilled into the San Antonio River due to a mechanical issue at the San Antonio Water System’s largest treatment plant Sunday night, the utility said. SAWS is reporting the spill to the Texas Commission on Environment al Quality, spokeswoman Anne Hayden said Monday. The city-owned utility estimates that more than 100,000 gallons spilled from the Steven M. Clouse Water Recycling Center.
The plant is on the South Side near Loop 1604, and is one of three SAWS facilities that discharge treated wastewater into creeks and rivers that enter the San Antonio River. The spill was caused by a mechanical issue that diverted the sewage to the river, Hayden said. Additional information about the problem wasn’t immediately available. It was “quickly detected and contained,” she said. The San Antonio River runs from its headwaters, north of downtown, through the River Walk and South Side, before traveling southeast through Wilson, Karnes and Goliad counties. It ultimately joins the Guadalupe River and enters San Antonio Bay, southeast of Victoria
