Central Ohio is bracing for severe weather Thursday evening into Friday morning, with a tornado watch in effect. Local law enforcement and emergency management agencies are coordinating efforts, urging residents to stay alert and prepared. One fatality was reported in a morning commute crash.

Severe weather is expected across Central Ohio Thursday into Friday morning. A tornado watch is in effect for parts of the area until 11p.m.Lt. Bryan Huddleston with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office said law enforcement is preparing for whatever the storm system may bring, even though conditions can change quickly.

“I don't know if you can because they change so much from storm to storm, and I don't know if there's any right answer to how you would prepare for a fierce storm,” Huddleston said. He said the unpredictability of severe weather makes planning difficult, but deputies are ready to respond if a crisis develops. “We work really well with our local EMA, and they keep us up to date with the National Weather Service,” Huddleston said. That communication begins at the 911 Center, where emergency officials keep track of changing conditions and coordinate response efforts from what neighbors are calling in. Madison County EMA Director Holly Langham said she expects to spend much of the evening at the 911 Center monitoring calls and conditions as the storm moves in. “If I need to go out and be boots on the ground, I will go out with Huddleston,” Langham said. “We will go out, and we will start looking at damage assessments and go from there.” Langham said the county’s emergency operations room is currently in monitoring status, but could be activated if conditions worsen.Deputies and officials say the best thing residents can do now is stay alert, make a plan, and be ready to act quickly if the weather turns dangerous. One person died in a crash during the busy morning commute on Columbus' east side Thursday.Few details were immediately available, but ABC 6 confirmed the crashA Marion man convicted of taking hundreds of thousands of dollars from customers for construction projects that were never finished is headed to prison.Stay #WeatherAware tonight as showers and thunderstorms move through the state.
