DOTHAN , Ala. -After a nice day on Saturday, a significant weather system will bring much-needed rain to southeast Alabama and adjacent area Sunday, but it comes with a threat of severe weather including damaging wind gusts and the possibility of tornadoes.
The National Weather Service predicts a slight risk for severe weather across much of the area Sunday. Here’s what you need to know to stay safe.The main line of storms will move through the region Sunday morning into the afternoon:Southwestern Georgia and Florida Big Bend:Additional strong storms are possible Sunday afternoon into early evening as the system moves overhead. Timing could change,are the primary concern, with winds potentially reaching 35 mph or higher ahead of the storms. However, meteorologists cannot rule out a tornado or two embedded within the squall line. Conditions ahead of the storms will be breezy, with frequent gusts between 30 to 35 mph expected throughout Sunday morning and afternoon.While severe weather is the immediate concern, this system will deliver beneficial rainfall the region desperately needs.60 to 80 percentMeteorologists note that while this rain is welcome, it won’t completely eliminate ongoing drought conditions. To keep pace with normal rainfall this time of year, the region needs about 1 to 1.25 inches every week.A Small Craft Advisory will be in effect for the northeastern Gulf Sunday into Monday morning. A high risk of rip currents is expected at area beaches Sunday and Monday.Review your severe weather safety plan.
