Five counties are under a severe thunderstorm watch through 8 p.m. Thursday, July 21.
The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union counties, effective from Thursday afternoon through 8 p.m. Thursday. The watch — which is not as urgent as a warning — also includes New York City.
A flood advisory is active in Bergen County through 2:15 p.m. in areas that are getting heavy downpours from the afternoon thunderstorms. “Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas” is possible, the advisory says. The thunderstorms in northern New Jersey have popped up during the fourth day of what’s expected to be, with temperatures soaring into the mid- to upper 90s in many parts of the region and high humidity making it feel as hot as 100 to 105 degrees.
