) - Severe storms tore through Pike County overnight, damaging property at Goshen High School and leaving the campus’ baseball facilities with the most significant impacts, school officials said. Goshen High School Principal Bennie Shellhouse said he learned about the damage early Thursday morning.
“The Sheriff’s Department had contacted me earlier this morning and let me know that we had some damage here, sent me some pictures, so I hustled to work this morning to get here, and we found all the damage here from our batting cage, and it’s kind of a locker room area that we use for the boys,” Shellhouse said. The storms damaged fencing around the baseball field and decimated structures and equipment near the field, including the batting cage area. Shellhouse said the school was already planning renovations at the baseball facilities and will likely fold repairs into that larger project after the baseball season. “With the batting cages and all that type of stuff, we were doing some renovations here anyway,” Shellhouse said. “We have about four or five more home ball games, so we’re going to wait until the end of this season and go ahead and do our entire renovation project along with this.” He said faculty members and community volunteers worked Thursday to clean up debris so the team can continue playing at home. “A lot of them took batting practice here yesterday, and that’s how quick life changes,” Shellhouse said. “They’ve just been kind of shocked about it … I think we can repair enough for us to be able to continue to play our games here and let them have a home field.”“No, I think it’ll give us something to play for,” Redmon said.The National Weather Service sent a crew to Pike County Thursday to determine whether a tornado may have caused the damage.
