The Harris County Clerk’s Office announced at least a dozen voting centers have lost power during primary runoff elections after severe thunderstorms rolled through the Houston area Tuesday afternoon.
– When thunderstorms rolled through the Houston area Tuesday afternoon, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said more than 10 voting centers lost power during the primary runoff elections.
Hidalgo said the Secretary of State, Jane Nelson, was immediately notified. According to Hidalgo, The remaining election location totaled about 300, did not lose power, and will remain open through 7 p.m.CenterPoint said more than 200,000 customers are without power as of 6 p.m. Tuesday, but they are working to continue to assess the situation and restore power as soon as possible
“We had literally just restored power and another storm came through. We have crews headed back to assist. Our crews are tired but we are pushing through,” said a CenterPoint spokesperson. On May 16, a powerful storm hit the Houston area, causing severe damage and power outages that lasted weeks. Crews from out of the state came to offer a helping hand restoring power, and according to CenterPoint, some of those same crews are headed back to help again.“The safety of election workers and voters is our priority. Please continue to monitor the weather in your area before heading out to vote.
