During this back-to-school season, doctors report an increase in severe cases of the common cold among some children — with more kids requiring hospital admission. COVID lockdowns may be to blame.

While it’s possible to get a cold any time of the year, most colds occur during the winter and spring, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .Many respiratory viruses can cause the common cold, but rhinoviruses are the most common, the CDC said. These viruses typically occur mostly in the summer and fall, causing the"summer flu," but can cause other illnesses, such as a rash known as hand, foot and mouth disease. Another respiratory virus that causes common cold symptoms is respiratory syncytial virus , but it can cause serious disease in infants.
