Apple TV+'s Severance returns for its second season with a bang, starting with a premiere episode that's a whirlwind of suspense and intrigue. The opening scene, a frenetic chase through Lumon Industries' severed floor, is a testament to the show's commitment to creating a visually arresting and immersive world. Executive producer Ben Stiller and star Adam Scott offer an exclusive peek behind the scenes of this complex sequence, revealing the months of planning, special effects, and logistical challenges involved in bringing it to life.

Apple TV+'s science fiction thriller , Severance , delves into its next chapter with a premiere episode that sets the stage for a thrilling and disorienting journey. Viewers will have to patiently piece together the narrative as the show unfolds weekly, but the opening scene is a whirlwind of suspense, providing a glimpse into the path that characters, particularly Adam Scott 's Mark S., will take as they unravel the mysteries surrounding Lumon Industries .

In an exclusive video from Vanity Fair, executive producer Ben Stiller, who also directed the season premiere, 'Hello, Ms. Cobel,' and star Scott shed light on the intricate making of that frantic sequence. The scene, which took four to five months to complete, involved an extensive amount of special effects and logistical maneuvering. As Stiller and Scott explain, Mark embarks on a frantic run the moment he steps off the elevator, returning to his 'innie' mindspace for the first time since discovering that his Lumon colleague, Ms. Casey, is actually Gemma, the wife his 'outie' believes died in a car crash. Driven by an urgent need to share this revelation with Ms. Casey, Mark sprints towards the wellness room. However, the journey proves to be far more complex than anticipated. Lumon's severed floor appears as a labyrinthine expanse of stark white corridors and sharp right-angle turns. Despite Mark's confidence in his knowledge of the way, capturing his frenetic dash was a technical feat, requiring more than simply following Scott with a Steadicam. The production team employed a bulky camera rig called a 'bolt arm,' alongside a collection of shots filmed on the hallway set whenever it was configured for the sequence. Scott even utilized a treadmill in certain instances. 'We don't like to rely too heavily on visual effects in the show to create backgrounds and environments,' Stiller notes. 'But we needed to for this shot because of the bolt arm taking up so much space.' The video further elaborates on Stiller's decision to forgo a Steadicam (it would have been 'too cumbersome' for the operator to keep pace with Mark's escalating speed) and reveals a glimpse into Scott's process of knowing when he was filming a portion of the high-intensity scene, even noting his preferred Gatorade flavor. Stiller emphasizes the intention behind kicking off the season with such an exhilarating and intriguing sequence, stating, 'We felt like we really wanted to kick off the season in a way that would be exciting and fun, and kind of give an indication of where we were going for season two. We felt like, 'All right, we're gonna indicate to the audience that this is some new stuff happening.' Adding to the intrigue, Scott and Stiller point out a mysterious figure who appears behind Mark after he reaches the former wellness room, but remain tight-lipped about his identity, leaving viewers to speculate and add to their ever-growing list of theories.
