It’s been quite a while since we last saw Mark S. , an employee at the mysterious company Lumon Industries, which uses a surgical procedure called “severance” to separate people’s home lives from their work lives. Mark’s department is called Macrodata Refinement. Employees sit at computers all day, sorting encrypted numbers into digital bins. They’re kept in the dark about what the numbers represent, only aware that some of the numbers are “scary” and evoke an unpleasant emotional response.Lumon founder Kier Eagan is worshipped like a cult leader at the company. Statues and paintings of him abound, and Ms. Cobel , the manager of the severed floor, even sings a creepy hymn in his honor at one point.
After learning that Gabby’s husband is a vocal supporter of severance, Devon guesses that Gabby was severed to avoid experiencing the pains of childbirth.Dylan discovers that Lumon has the ability to wake up their “innies” outside the severed floor through an emergency protocol called the overtime contingency. When supervisor Mr. Milchick requires information from Dylan after he’s clocked out for the day, he uses the overtime contingency.
