All to make sure that no matter how young or how old, that everyone understands the importance of paying attention when they see orange signs and yellow vests

) - This week is National Work Zone Awareness Week. And several organizations are teaming up to make sure workers and pedestrians stay safe. The goal is to bring that number down to zero and keep workers and everyone else safe.

“They deserve to go home every night. That’s what we want to give them, and that’s the message that we’re trying to get out to the public. When you come into a work zone, slow down, get rid of the distractions, put the phone down and watch for workers, and watch for the heavy equipment out there that’s maintaining that road,” ALDOT, Assistant Region Engineer Brian Aaron said.

Another way to spread that message is with Millie. This Labrador visits schools around the state helping to start the conversation with students about texting and other dangerous distractions while driving. “Last year, she was honored and sworn in as a K9 trooper by Governor Ivey. So Governor Ivey recognizes the importance of this, along with Alabama Law Enforcement. So Millie’s the hook. She gets the platform. She gets me in front of a microphone,” Morris King with Vulcan Materials said.
