Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao hasthe city can combat crime by “coming together,” urging community members to collaborate with one another and “push aside” division and fear.
California state Sen. Lola Smallwood-Cuevas, D-Los Angeles, has introduced legislation aimed at limiting employees' responsibilities in some stores to fight shoplifting. She has claimed poor and “working” communities have experienced the brunt of retail theft, creating a more unsafe environment.
