Several hundred people gathered at the Texas Capitol on Wednesday to protest new White House policies. It is part of the nationwide day of action against Projec
t 2025 and President Donald Trump's executive orders.
Those orders include a directive to federal agencies to shut down their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work. A growing number of U.S. companies have pulled back on diversity initiatives. A change that brought protestors to Wednesday’s rally. Katherine’s “Save Our Democracy” sign sums up her feelings about ending workplace programs that prioritize historically marginalized groups.“Are you a little disappointed by the size of this crowd,” asked CBS Austin Reporter Bettie Cross.
President Trump says DEI initiatives are inherently discriminatory. His administration supports hiring practices that select candidates based solely on their qualifications, abilities, and intelligence.“As a minority, as a Mexican American student in college, I know that DEI has given me opportunities to many places that I wouldn’t have been allowed years ago. Him taking all of these things away from us is really painful,” said Deysi Martinez-Perez, a student at St. Edwards University.
