GEORGE TOWN: Police here have arrested seven men following a riot between supporters of the Penang and Kedah football teams outside the City Stadium after Kedah beat Penang 2-1 on Tuesday (Aug 22).
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said two of the suspects sustained injuries to their head after they were believed to have been hit by rocks that were thrown and the glass door of a bus was smashed during the incident at about 11.20pm on Tuesday.
"The rioting at a petrol station involved two groups of men who are believed to be supporters of two local soccer clubs. "It started with provocation between both groups outside the stadium after watching the Malaysia Super League match between Penang and Kedah."Police also confiscated two rocks, two traffic cones and a stick believed to have been used by the suspects during the incident.
"A glass door of a bus ferrying Kedah team supporters was smashed by a suspect while two other suspects sustained head injuries after they were believed to have been hit by rocks that were thrown," he said in a statement on Wednesday . The case is being investigated under Section 148 and Section 427 of the Penal Code for rioting and vandalism, and all suspects have since been remanded for two days to facilitate investigation.
