BREAKING: Seven men appear in court over shooting of police officer in front of his son
Seven men have appeared in court after being charged with the attempted murder of a police chief inspector in Northern Ireland.
John Caldwell ‘suffered life-changing injuries’ after being shot multiple times by masked gunmen at a sports complex in Omagh, Co Tyrone, in February. His young son was with him as he loaded footballs into the boot of his car when the group approached. After the initial gunhots, officer ran a short distance, but fell to the ground where they continued to fire at him as children ran in terror to get to safety.On Saturday evening, police said two men aged 28, and five men aged 33, 38, 45, 47 and 72, had been charged with attempted murder.
Two of them, aged 38 and 45, were also charged with membership of a proscribed organisation, namely the IRA.All seven appeared before Dungannon Magistrates’ Court earlier today.
