Seven victims of human trafficking, including two minors, were rescued during an operation at the port of Bongao in Tawi-Tawi on Sunday, Jan. 22.
ZAMBOANGA CITY –
Authorities from the Tawi-Tawi Provincial Mobile Force Company and the Tawi- Tawi Maritime station together with other police units acted on information that a group of travelers will be heading toward Sabah Malaysia from Zamboanga City via Bongao, Tawi-Tawi province. The lawmen proceeded to the port of Bongao and profiled the passengers on board the M/V Magnolia Lilliflora where they encountered the seven individuals.
The victims were reportedly recruited by a certain Andok Iqbal, a Malaysian, to work at a palm oil plantation. The rescued victims were temporarily housed at the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office in Bongao before they were turned over to the Ministry of Social Welfare and Development Office for counselling stress debriefing and assistance.
