The Walton County Sheriff’s Office has released a statement regarding the seven-hour-long stand-off on Highway 98 with an armed subject suspected of having a mental health crisis over the Holiday weekend.

WCSO was given an approximate location in the Miramar Beach area, leading a deputy to spot the man’s vehicle near Highway 98 and Sandestin Lane. was called to the scene at 2:38 p.m. For the next several hours negotiators reportedly continued to try and talk to the subject to de-escalate the situation.
At 8:55 p.m., the drone was used to get closer to the vehicle; a few moments later, the man raised his gun and pointed it at the done, WCSO says. “This incident showcased the professionalism of numerous aspects of our agency from CNU to our Drone Team to SWAT,” said Sheriff Michael Adkinson, according to the press release. “We realize many people were frustrated by the traffic it created, but everyone went home, and no one lost their life.
