Coach Kevin Willard is staying at Seton Hall after flirting with Virginia Tech.
The veteran coach, who just completed his ninth season with the Pirates, has decided not to leave to coach Virginia Tech, according to a source. Willard, who made $2.1 million to coach Seton Hall last season, will get a significant raise and some years tacked onto his contract, a source said. Terms were not immediately available, but it's believed Willard was under contract through 2020-21 before this extension.
Willard also received assurances, a source said, that the school will upgrade its facilities and provide larger salaries for other members of the coaching staff. Plus, the Pirates lose only postgrad big Mike Nzei from this year’s squad, which overachieved in a watered-down Big East and grabbed an at-large NCAA bid, marking the fourth straight season Seton Hall has participated in the NCAA tournament. The Pirates lost to favored Wofford in the first round.
Willard’s job seemed to be in jeopardy after that season, but he was retained by athletic director Pat Lyons. According to sources, Willard flirted that March with becoming the head coach at low-major Holy Cross of the Patriot League, where his father Ralph Willard had had success years earlier. The elder Willard took the Crusaders to the NCAA tournament four times in a 10-year tenure from 1999-2009.
