It has long been thought paradoxical that South Africa, celebrated for its transition from a brutal system of racial oppression to a democratic dispensation, witnessed so many violent protests. Even more puzzling is that trade unions aligned with the ruling African National Congress turn against their allies.
We learn from the sociology of protests that protest groups that want to sway the public, and political decision-makers have a wide range of options for future actions. It spans the usage of mild protest and non-violent street protest, to extreme violence. A case in point is the recently ended strike by public healthcare workers, led by trade union Nehawu . The trade union ended the strike after reaching an in-principle settlement with the government over their pay for 2022.
