Senior Ethan Champlin won a national championship at UCLA in 2023 and leads the top-ranked Bruins into this week's national tournament. His secret: An obsession with the little things and leadership by example.
Theo Edwards has been coaching collegiate men’s volleyball for 14 years. As a player before that, he led that same Cal State Northridge program to a No. 1 ranking. He’s been around the sport at its highest level for all his adult life. But when UCLA walked into CSUN’s gym for a match last season, Edwards witnessed something he hadn’t seen before.
“He’s just impressive in all aspects. And I think one of the most impressive things about him is that when he puts his mind to something and makes a commitment then he's all in. 'And when he's all in, it brings out the best in him.” Champlin visits his old high school often, bringing UCLA gear, and — more importantly — the advice of an alumnus who didn’t play at one of San Diego’s traditional volleyball powerhouses.
