The Williams sisters are reuniting in England.
Serena and Venus Williams will compete together for the first time in four years in the Ladies’ Doubles tournament at Wimbledon in London via a wild card invitation, The pair own six Wimbledon doubles championships, having last won 10 years ago, and will aim to become the oldest pairing to win the event, per The Athletic.
This family reunion comes shortly after the 44-year-old Serena surprisingly un-retired earlier this month and competed at the Queen’s Club Championship. Their run ended prematurely due to a knee injury suffered by Mboko in singles that forced them to withdraw from the tourney.
“It was so fun. I had so much fun playing with Victoria,” Williams said after the win.
“We’ve never played together but it just felt so natural playing with her. ” Serena is scheduled to compete in the doubles event at the Berlin Open this week alongside partner Karolina Muchova, with the two set a for a match Tuesday.
“I’ve had enough pressure,” Williams said in early June. “For me right now, it’s really just about …my kids getting to see me play. Olympia is a little bit older, Adira is very young, but it’s also still moments like that. ” There had been some uncertainty about whether Serena would play at Wimbledon, but she will indeed compete alongside the partner she has enjoyed the most success with during her legendary career.
The Williams sisters have won 14 grand slams doubles tournaments together, including victories at Wimbledon in 2000, 20002, 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2016. They last competed at the 2022 US Open, losing in the first round.
“Yeah, like I said the other day, it’s just a day at a time,” Serena previously earlier this month about potentially competing at Wimbledon. “I still have a little time to decide, and they have been great about giving me that space and time to decide. ”Neither sister is slated to play in the singles event, but The Athletic noted there is still one wild card spot left.
“I can’t say no right now,” Serena said earlier this month. “I feel like I probably need to train a little bit more if I want to play singles, and we will see if I get there, and if not … that’s not my journey right now. ”
