Serena Williams says she always wanted to end her tennis career by going out on top.
The legendary tennis player and her equally impressive sister,on Saturday as part of A+E Networks and the History Channel's “History Talks” series held in Washington, DC. During their conversation, per, Serena opened up about her decision to retire following her final match at the US Open in New York City earlier this month. “I just needed to stop,” she said. “I always said I wanted to stop when I’m playing really good tennis and winning and beating good players.
Cooper also asked them both about what it's like to know that they're responsible for changing the game of tennis forever, to which Venus replied, “For me, I want to do more.” She continued, “You want to be better every moment. It’s never enough. If it was perfect, it still wasn’t perfect enough.” Serena added that she never really thought about it as, “When you’re on the inside, you can’t see it. It’s completely different when you’re involved.
The trio also addressed the difficulties they face in trying to keep their private lives out of the public eye due to their worldwide notoriety. Cooper admitted that he's grateful that he didn't become famous until his mid-30s as it gave him the opportunity to live a relatively normal life first. He also confessed that, these days, he doesn't leave his Manhattan apartment all that much, a sentiment Serena enthusiastically agreed with.
