Senzo Meyiwa's trial held ransom by celebrity witness's refusal to appear on camera
has produced yet more drama, after state prosecutor George Baloyi told the court that the next witness after an unidentified celebrity state witness, set to ascend the dock after Mthokozisi Thwala, wants to bar the media, citing safety threats.
Baloyi told the court that the witness, who is regarded as a public figure, will be discouraged from rendering testimony if the media is present. He also added that the witness had no problem with images taken by the media outside of court proceedings. All lawyers presenting the accused vehemently opposed the application, citing that the public had a constitutional right to observe the proceedings as they happened.
The defence raised objections, asking why the celebrity felt comfortable enough to comment on the trial on social media, as well as appearing in a Netflix documentary about the murder and granting media interviews, yet now feels unsafe testifying in an open court.
