Prime Minister has refused to describe Beijing as a 'threat' despite increasing Conservative pressure
is understood to be sympathetic to the concerns of her Conservative colleagues, as she retweeted a Sir Iain tweet that warned the UK “cannot afford to be complacent about the threat that the CCP [Chinese Communist Party] poses”.
Mr Sunak confronted one of Beijing’s leaders at the G20 summit in India in the wake of the allegations, telling Chinese premier Li Qiang that the alleged spying amounts to interference in Britain’s democracy and is “unacceptable”.
In a direct rebuke to his backbenchers calling for a tougher line, the Prime Minister added: “Actually, I think the right thing to do is take the opportunity to engage to raise concerns specifically, rather than just shouting from the sidelines.” The researcher involved in the allegations had links to several senior Tory MPs, including Security Minister Tom Tugendhat, who attends Cabinet meetings, and Commons Foreign Affairs Committee chairwoman Alicia Kearns, who have both been critical of China.
The Briton was arrested on 13 March along with another man on suspicion of spying for Beijing, it was revealed by theOfficers from the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command, which oversees espionage-related offences, are investigating.
