The U.S. Senate need to better understand the freelance revolution—and what it means for both individual careerists and companies like Google

. Google employed 121,000 alternative people and 102,000 regular employees. This is less unusual than it sounds. Lots of organizations have larger numbers of part-time or freelance workers than they do full-timers. Historically it had more to do with seasonality like Xmas retail; these days it’s the way business staffs up. The Senators also charge Google with inequality, a

that shows freelancers and other contract staff made less on average than full-timers. But, that isn’t unusual; freelancers aren’t paid for downtime and don’t receive benefits that are part of the total comp of regular employees.; it’s a big company and undoubtedly some people are incorrectly or inequitably treated. But, let’s not ask Google or any other organization to turn back the clock.

Instead, Google is just one of thousands of organizations that believes in a flexible, blended workforce that combines the benefits of full-time and temporary project based expertise. This will not be a surprise, for example, to the White House; it’s how the Trump Organization operates. Or the British Mail. Or the hundreds of colleges and universities that rely extensively on adjunct educators.
