The news comes hours after the NHL said the Senators will lose a first-round pick for their role in a nullified Evgenii Dadonov trade.
The are firing general manager Pierre Dorion, team sources said, just hours after the announced the franchise will be involving . The NHL ruled earlier Wednesday that Ottawa must surrender a first-round pick in either 2024, 2025 or 2026, because they failed to properly alert the of Dadonov’s no-trade clause. The Golden Knights subsequently tried to trade Dadonov to Anaheim in March of 2022 — a transaction the league canceled because the were on Dadonov’s no-trade list.
Early in his tenure, Dorion and then-owner Eugene Melnyk plunged the hockey club into a significant rebuild midway through the 2017-18 season. Over the next couple of years, the club jettisoned the likes of , , Jean Gabriel Pageau and other popular players to make way for what the club promised would be a window of “unparalleled success” from 2021 to 2025. And while the Senators have yet to qualify for the postseason, Dorion has helped create a solid core of young players in Ottawa.
