Senator Chuck Grassley is investigating how a former police officer, Jason Krasley, was hired by the U.S. Center for SafeSport despite facing multiple accusations of sex crimes.
Republican Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa has launched an inquiry into the hiring practices of the U.S. Center for SafeSport, focusing on how former Allentown Police Officer Jason Krasley was employed as an investigator despite facing multiple accusations of sex crimes. Grassley, the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has sent a letter to the Center's CEO, Ju’Riese Colon, requesting a detailed response to 13 questions within a month.
These questions delve into how the Center overlooked red flags surrounding Krasley's past and if they were aware of newer allegations against him while he was employed there. Krasley's history includes multiple arrests spanning from 2015 to 2024, encompassing charges of rape, sex trafficking, soliciting prostitution, theft, and harassment. Despite these allegations, Krasley was hired by the Center in 2021 after leaving his police job. It wasn't until November 2022, when local media reported on Krasley's initial arrests for alleged corruption within the Allentown Police Department, that the Center terminated his employment. The connection between Krasley, the Center, and his termination only became public in December 2022 when The Associated Press revealed his prior role as a SafeSport investigator.Senator Grassley expressed his concern in the letter, stating that both claimants and respondents deserve impartial investigators free from accusations of sexual misconduct. He emphasized the importance of investigators possessing both professional and moral qualifications, particularly given SafeSport's crucial role in safeguarding athletes from abuse. Grassley's inquiry also includes information about an incident in June 2022, while Krasley was still employed by the Center, where he was involved in an altercation with a real estate appraiser. Krasley allegedly caused $2,500 in damage to the appraiser's car, leading to charges of harassment using lewd and threatening language. He resolved these charges with an accelerated rehabilitative disposition in December, a month after his termination from SafeSport for allegedly stealing $5,500 seized during a drug bust. More serious charges of rape, sex trafficking, and soliciting prostitution followed in January 2023. Krasley's attorney maintains his client's innocence regarding these allegations
