WASHINGTON—The Senate voted 62 to 37 Wednesday to advance bipartisan legislation that would cement same-sex marriage protections into law, aiming to codify rights established inThe Respect for Marriage
Act, if signed into law, would codify the ability of same-sex as well as interracial couples to get married and require states to recognize the marriages. The bill needed 60 votes to proceed under Senate rules.
