In response, GOP senators held a late-night vote to reject a similar measure the following day, attempting to appease the president and halt a feud that disrupted legislative business.
The conflict escalated during a closed-door lunch where Trump berated Senator Bill Cassidy for his stance, calling him a "lunatic.
" Cassidy later received a private briefing from Vice President JD Vance and envoy Steve Witkoff, after which he voted against the second resolution. Senator Rand Paul voted "present" to give the president more negotiating space. The second resolution failed 47-50-1. Senate Majority Leader John Thune stated Trump was pleased with the outcome, though it remains uncertain if this will fully placate him, especially after he delayed signing a bipartisan housing bill.
