A key committee in the Senate on Tuesday worked to push forward President Donald Trump's nominee to the Federal Election Commission -- in what could be the first step in confronting the paralysis that has gripped the nation's top election watchdog.
Democrats on the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration sharply criticized the record of the nominee, GOP attorney James"Trey" Trainor, citing his past opposition to donor disclosure and his work to redraw political maps in Texas. Senate Democrats also criticized Republicans for bucking long Senate tradition and advancing a GOP nomination without an accompanying Democratic nominee. No Republicans on the panel raised objections to Trainor moving forward to the full Senate.
