Senate Republicans, who have spent the past year and a half mostly aligned with President Donald Trump, found themselves at odds with his endorsement against their colleague on Tuesday. Many Republicans reportedly appeared surprised by Trump’s show of support for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is competing with incumbent Senator John Cornyn for the state’s GOP nomination.
The president announced in a social media post on Tuesday that Paxton has his “Complete and Total Endorsement. ” “None of us control what the president does,” Majority Leader John Thune said after Trump’s post.
“He made his decision about that. That doesn’t change the way I feel, and I am certainly supportive of—will continue to be supportive of Senator Cornyn and his reelection. ” Thune and many of his colleagues have backed Cornyn’s campaign over the past year, even as the president withheld an endorsement for either of the two candidates.
Lawmakers and experts alike believe the incumbent is a stronger opponent against the Democratic nominee, state Representative, conducted by Texas Southern University between late April and early May, found the incumbent had one percent more support of registered voters than Paxton, although the results were within the margin of error. Senator Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican, reportedly claimed the general election could be three times more expensive as a result of Trump’s endorsement.

“But you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out the pathway for Paxton is there, but it’s more uphill. And it will cost more. ” Trump made his endorsement days after backing a successful primary challenge against another incumbent senator, Louisiana Republican Bill Cassidy.
He also supported an opponent of Representative Thomas Massie, the Kentucky Republican who lost his Tuesday primary election.in early races around the country, but it remains to be seen whether it will have the same effect in November. Polls show Americans are increasingly unhappy with his agenda, a slide that Republican candidates may have difficulty overcoming.
